David provides face to face, phone/online and home based counselling.

COUNSELLING

Counselling often looks different for each person, and can also differ depending on the reason(s) you have sought counselling. There area few approaches that David follows:

  • listening to your concerns, needs and expectations,

  • joining you on a journey for change - sometimes leading the way, sometimes not,

  • sharing his knowledge of how to move forward,

  • allowing you a space to express your fears, worries and concerns,

  • talking on your terms - not pressuring you into talking, and

  • providing support that is based on what works.

adolescents

Adolescent counselling can vary from structured formal talking to more diverse and flexible sessions including art, games, or even talking while going for a walk. Style and approach often depends on the adolescent and the issue. It is common that adults (parents or carers) are included in sessions.

children

When working with children, it is important to work within the development stage of the child. Counselling often includes a gentle approach - using play, art and therapeutic activities are common. Supporting children often includes spending time with parents.

approaches to counselling

David's counselling practice has most often utilised individual evidence-based approaches, frequently shaping his approach with formal approaches such as:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy,

  • Behaviour Change Techniques,

  • Systems Theory,

  • Attachment Theory,

  • Trauma Theory, and

  • Narrative Therapy.

David also relies on strategies such as client-focused, solution-focused and strength-based approaches.

SUPPORTing families

Families are often impacted by issues, and sometimes supporting all the family is the best approach. Counselling for the family doesn't have to involve everyone all of the time, it can include working with parents and carers separately, supporting siblings as a group, or spending time with a child or adolescent and a parent/carer.
